In early 2011, TARA's customer was searching for a modular and flexible DVB middleware as basis for the next generation STB product line with several variations, e.g. regarding different chipsets, different tuners and different CA systems. After a detailed evaluation, the customer decided to deploy TARA's Inaris DVB Middleware as well as the TVolution DVB Turnkey for the graphical user interface application.

Currently, TARA extends its Inaris DVB Middleware to meet the customer's requirements. The customer's engineering team integrates the complete solution on several product platforms. For example, in case of CI+ and embedded Nagra, TARA prepares its Inaris DVB Middleware for the integration, whereas the integration of CI+ and embedded Nagra modules is done with the team and expertise of TARA's customer.

The market release is planned for Q2/2012.

• Specific enhancements: Extension for HD+, e.g. Astra LCN, preparation for integration of CI+ and embedded Nagra.

YouView is an advanced combination of digital terrestrial television in the UK (Freeview) and internet services, such as Video-on-demand, Catch-up TV, as well as TV apps and widgets. YouView Website

TARA's customer uses the Inaris DVB Middleware with Freeview+ HD functionality as basis for the DVB reception and recording (dual tuner) and integrates it into the customer-specific software environment with YouView functionality. The GUI application on top of the DVB Middleware and YouView solution is developed by the customer.

• Specific enhancements: To meet the YouView requirements, TARA has extended several components of the Inaris DVB Middleware, e.g. the Service Manager, EPG Manager and PVR Manager modules.

Broadcom

TARA's partner uses TVolution DVB Turnkey solution (incl. Inaris DVB Middleware) as basis for DVB core functionality and user interface application. Based on TARA's APIs and integration examples, the partner has integrated TVolution with its own software solution for DLNA, Over-the-top video (OTT) and Video-on-demand (VOD) as basis for a future product and to demonstrate the functionality to customers. Furthermore, the partner has integrated HbbTV functionality, based on TARA's HbbTV Receiver solution.

The HD PVR consists of two co-existing parts: the DVB core, based on TARA's Inaris DVB Middleware with TVolution DVB Turnkey user interface, and the IP/VOD core developed by TARA's customer. For the IP/VOD core, the GUI is rendered and displayed by a browser. Depending on the required functionality, the PVR seamlessly switches between both worlds and both UI approaches.

Trident Microsystems

"Alumin" is a joint R&D project of TARA Systems GmbH and the Research Center for Information Technology (FZI) in Karlsruhe. The goal of Alumin is to establish an easy-to-use Set-Top Box platform, which integrates TV functionality with services in the context of "Ambient Assisted Living" (AAL). The Alumin project has been selected for support by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).

• Specific enhancements: The solution was extended with a new user interface with new functionality for receiving emails, photos, news, RSS feeds and further features. Furthermore, additional software modules, e.g. for communication between STB and server including handling of authentification and data encryption have been integrated.
• Embedded Wizard GUI Technology for design of a specialized graphical user interface suited for elderly people.

Driven by a regulation of the European Parliament to provide more transparency to end-consumers, energy providers want to enable consumers, to monitor their past and current consumption - e.g. via Internet - and thus establish a considerate handling of valuable energy resources. But, since PC and Internet are not available at every household yet, the existing TV set constitutes a more comfortable and easy to handle display for power consumption statistics.

In this context, TARA Systems has developed a technology to broadcast server-hosted meter statistics (electricity, gas, water) to Set-Top Boxes at households without internet access and displays theses values on screen, integrated into the user interface. For that project, TARA has teamed up with a leading German energy provider.
