Faster Than Apps, Clearer Than Feeds:
Why Teletext Is Still Trusted by Millions in 2025

Imagine this: it’s the evening of a World Cup match. Millions of fans are glued to their screens, some scrolling frantically through social media feeds, jumping between apps for live scores, news updates, and commentary. Meanwhile, a Teletext user presses a single button and sees everything in one place: live scores, news headlines, lottery results, and more. Without ads, without distractions, and instantly. Not even ChatGPT can deliver that kind of efficiency. Julia Gessl, head of the Austrian ORF Teletext, sums Teletext up perfectly, as a service that, even 2025, over 50 years after its invention, continues “in its familiar form, offering a quick overview of global events within minutes.”

This is the magic of Teletext: a single, easy-to-use medium delivering all the essentials at a glance. Millions of viewers continue to trust it every day, across Europe:

  • Germany: ~10 million weekly users (2024)
  • Austria: ~700 000 daily users (2023)
  • Switzerland: ~800 000 daily users (2023)
  • Netherlands: ~3.2 million weekly TV users; ~1 million weekly app users (2024)

Millions of Users, Everyday Habits -
Teletext Engagement Across Germany

Our studies show that even in 2025, Teletext remains deeply embedded in viewers’ daily routines. Teletext usage follows a distinct daily and weekly rhythm. Activity is significantly higher on weekends, with peak usage nearly twice as high as on weekdays, reflecting more leisure time for viewers. During the day, usage rises steadily from 5:00 to 11:00, remains relatively stable through midday, and climbs again toward early evening around 19:00. Interestingly, prime time (20:00-21:30) sees a dip in activity, which aligns with viewers’ attention being focused on live TV programs rather than Teletext. Usage reaches its lowest point between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m., when most viewers are asleep. Overall, Teletext usage mirrors traditional TV viewing patterns.

Usage is highest on public broadcasters. According to our measurements, on an average day in Germany, Das Erste sees the most requests, followed by ZDF. Private channels, such as n-tv and RTL see lower traffic. This shows that audiences turn to Teletext primarily for serious, fact-based information such as front-page news, sports, and lottery results,   Across all channels, page 100, sports, and news dominate, while entertainment, chat, or niche content is secondary. Major live events, such as the World Cup, trigger notable spikes, demonstrating Teletext’s continued importance as a real-time, reliable information source.

A Challenge in the Streaming Era

For more than 30 years, TARA Systems has been at the forefront of Teletext technology, powering over 100 million DVB-enabled TVs and set-top boxes worldwide, from LG, to Sony, to Panasonic. Viewers expect Teletext on every device, and they notice when it’s missing. But the rise of streaming services presents a major challenge: OTT platforms don’t carry Teletext signals. Without adaptation, millions of viewers risk losing instant access to the service they had relied on for decades.

Yet Teletext isn’t just legacy technology; it is legally and culturally entrenched. In Austria, Teletext is explicitly considered part of the public broadcasting service. In Switzerland, the RTVG regulates Teletext as a “gekuppelter Dienst” (coupled service), formally acknowledging its supplementary role. And in Germany, Teletext is enshrined in the publicly mandated broadcasting service (§§ 11 ff. RStV), ensuring that it remains a recognized and accessible information medium. These legal and cultural foundations underscore the urgency of innovation. Preserving Teletext’s unique value in the digital era means adapting it to modern platforms without losing the instant, reliable access millions of users expect.

How TARA Systems Innovates

TARA Systems answered this challenge by splitting Teletext into two components, allowing the service to be distributed independently of broadcast signals. Our server-based Teletext solution brings the classic service into the streaming era:

  • Instant page access: Users no longer wait for pages to cycle sequentially in a carousel; all pages and sub-pages are available immediately.
  • Device compatibility: Teletext now works seamlessly on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Performance at scale: Thousands of pages per second are processed server-side, eliminating delays, even on channels with high traffic.
  • Familiar user experience: Longtime Teletext users continue to navigate pages intuitively, with no compromise on speed or accessibility.

This approach preserves Teletext’s unique ability to see all relevant news, sports, lottery, and other key updates in one place; while adapting to the realities of OTT, IPTV, and connected devices. Thanks to TARA Systems’ Teletext solution, users now access this medium on more than five million streaming boxes, smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. For example, TARA Systems enabled seamless Teletext access for streaming services such as MagentaTV and waipu.tv, making it available on dozens of channels. TARA Systems’ adaptation of Teletext brings the same convenience and immediacy that users have relied on for decades, now fully optimized for the digital era.

Teletext solutions from TARA Systems ensure a seamless and reliable experience for major OTT providers such as Telekom (Magenta TV), Quickline, and Exaring AG (waipu.tv).

Why Teletext Is Still Highly Relevant in 2025

Teletext’s relevance goes beyond nostalgia. It’s the fastest, simplest way to stay informed today. Users check scores, news, and lottery results before, while and after watching TV. Its immediate and focused nature makes it an efficient alternative to scrolling through multiple apps or websites. Teletext ensures that users get quick, verified information without distractions or delays, a habit cultivated over decades.

TARA Systems continues to innovate, ensuring that Teletext is:

  • Accessible on all modern devices
  • Fast and reliable even under high traffic
  • Culturally relevant, working on whichever device
